West Harrison Students Track
the Movement of Spring! West
Harrison's environment science class taught by Mr. Koenig and Mrs.
Melby helped Mrs. Nunez's talented and gifted students participate in a
new internet project. The project involved tracking the sweep of
spring in the Northern Hemisphere by keeping an eye on plants (Red
Emperor tulips) as they burst forth and bloom! This exciting seasonal
event began last fall.
The science and TAG classes joined 400 classrooms in planting Journey North gardens this past fall. Each group used the same tulip bulb variety (Red Emperor) and planting guidelines. As the tulips finally emerge and bloom, the students will report the news to classmates throughout the hemisphere. All Journey North participants can watch this wave of spring move ahead on our maps.
As students
make observations in their own schoolyards, and observe the wave
of spring progress on interactive maps, they begin to see how seasonal
climatic factors influence plant growth. The relationship between
geography, temperature, and the arrival of spring is revealed, one
garden at a time.
Spring has not spring yet at West Harrison, but we are anxiously awaiting the first sign of spring. ***UPDATE- The tulips have emerged on Wednesday, March 15th!***
