CHICKEN POX UPDATE - NOVEMBER 19

We have had several confirmed cases of chickenpox this past week.  Chickenpox is a very contagious infection caused by a virus.  It causes a blister-like rash, itching, tiredness and mild fever lasting an average of 4-7 days.  It can be contagious for 1-2 days before the rash starts and until all blisters are crusted.  It takes 10-21 days after contact with an infected person for someone to develop chickenpox. Most children are now vaccinated with at least one dose of varicella vaccine, but one dose is only 80-85% effective for preventing chickenpox. If you notice a blister like rash on your child, please keep him/her at home until the rash has crusted over, typically 4-7 days.  If you have any questions, please contact me at (712) 646-2231 or e-mail me at lchase@w-harrison.k12.ia.us .
